Sport England Funds New ENBS Classes

New Free Community Movement Classes supported by the National Lottery Grant from Sport England

We are delighted to introduce a new programme of free weekly community movement classes, made possible through funding from Sport England and held every Tuesday evening at the studios of English National Ballet School.

This National Lottery Grant from Sport England enables ENBS to remove barriers to participation, ensuring the classes are free and open to all, regardless of background, experience, or physical ability. No previous dance experience is required, and participants are encouraged to move at their own pace in a welcoming, supportive environment.

From HIV rehabilitation to a funded community programme

These classes have grown out of ENBS’s long-standing partnership with CW+, the official charity of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Working alongside CW+, ENBS has been delivering movement classes for the Kobler Clinic Rehabilitation Class, which supports patients living with HIV. Designed to support mobility, strength, balance, long-term health management and confidence, the sessions also create space for creativity, enjoyment, and social connection, elements that are increasingly recognised as vital to long-term wellbeing.

Participants consistently report the positive impact of the classes, not only on their physical recovery but on their confidence, motivation, and sense of belonging.

Commenting on one of the in-person sessions with the ENBS, Taz from the Rehabilitation Class said: ‘It brought me alive! I was ecstatic, it made me forget how old I am’.

Their feedback highlighted how valuable ongoing access to engaging, supportive movement is for maintaining health, wellbeing, and routine. With support from Sport England, ENBS was able to respond directly to this request, transforming a successful rehabilitation programme into an open-access community initiative. The funding has also enabled CW+ and ENBS to expand the programme to reach hospital inpatients, bringing one-to-one delivery to the HIV and Oncology ward at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Removing barriers, widening access

Sport England’s funding has been instrumental in allowing ENBS to offer these community classes free of charge, opening them up to a wider audience while staying true to their origins in HIV rehabilitation.

The Tuesday evening classes are inclusive and adaptable, with exercises that can be modified to suit a range of needs and abilities. While rooted in healthcare-led movement practice, the sessions now welcome anyone who would benefit from gentle, supported movement in a creative environment.

At their core, the classes reflect a shared belief between ENBS and Sport England: that physical activity should be accessible, enjoyable, and beneficial to both physical and mental health.

Meet the teacher: Olivia Devine

The classes are led by Olivia Devine, a London based professional dancer and teacher of ballet and contemporary dance. A graduate of the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance (BA Hons), Olivia has performed with the Royal Opera as part of the ballet ensemble, including productions of Les Vêpres Siciliennes and Faust in 2025.

Alongside her performing career, Olivia is a certified teacher of the Rambert Grades Contemporary Dance syllabus and co-director of LEGEM Dance Cooperative. She is passionate about working with adult and mature students, creating classes that are accessible, empowering, and rooted in care and encouragement.

Drawing on the foundations of classical ballet technique, Olivia’s classes focus on expressive movement, body awareness, coordination, balance, and posture. Accompanied by musician Mark Crawley, her teaching places strong emphasis on musicality, creating a positive, energising environment where participants can reconnect with movement and find joy in the studio.
