Freelance Ballet Teacher

Title of Post:  Freelance Ballet Teacher 
Reporting To:  Courses and Widening Participation Manager 
Salary Range:  £40 per hour 
Working Pattern:  4-8 hours per week 
Contract duration:  Freelance 
Place of work:  English National Ballet School, Hortensia Road, London SW10 0QS 
Key Relationships:  Artistic Staff, Artistic Director and Student Support Team. 
Purpose of the role: 

 

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Freelance Ballet Teacher to lead our community ballet classes. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with students aged 12-15, nurturing their love for ballet in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

  • To plan and deliver group ballet classes to meet the needs of each community group. 
  • Plan and deliver engaging ballet lessons for all levels, ensuring a positive and motivating atmosphere. 
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages students to improve their technique and express themselves. 
  • Provide individual attention and constructive feedback to students. 
  • Ensure safety and proper technique are followed during class. 
  • To ensure the training is safe, professional, and comprehensive and the students remain engaged and motivated. 
Job requirements: 
  • To be available outside of scheduled hours where requests are reasonable, including some evenings and weekend work to cover performances 
  • Undergo DBS check regarding working with minors. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR BALLET TEACHER 

 

Essential 
  • Professional ballet training and experience 
  • At least 2 years’ experience teaching Ballet 
  • Able to teach large classes 
  • Excellent communicator 
  • Able to work within the scope of practice  
  • Mindfulness and self-awareness and able to work in a team 

 

 
Desirable 
  • Experience working within under 18s 
  • Experience in working with dancers, performing arts or sports 
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team

Contemporary Teacher
Title of Post: Contemporary Teacher
Reporting To: Lynne Charles, Artistic Director
 Salary Range: £40,000-£45,000 pro rata.
 Contract Terms: 1-year fixed term with a view to move to a permanent position. The ideal start date is 1st September 2025.

The role is part time working approximately 2 days a week (0.4), with a 3-month probationary period. Working patterns vary and may include some evening and weekend work. All annual leave is to be taken outside school term and short courses. An option of working 3 days a week (0.6) including choreography teaching may be discussed where the candidate holds suitable experience.

Main Purpose of the Job: To teach contemporary and to prepare students across all three-year groups for a career as a professional dancer. The teacher must be proficient in and able to teach either Grahm, Horton or Limon Technique to the highest level. They will be tasked with setting up the syllabus of this technique within the school and must be able to coach and create work within one of these styles. The post-holder is expected to play a major role in the pedagogic and pastoral care of the students at the school and to develop students to realise their potential as dancers.  The post-holder will play a key part in wider school developments and will work with colleagues to deliver the vision and mission of the school.
Safeguarding Duties and Responsibilities: The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of all students, all employees are expected to share this commitment. Staff are expected to proactively ensure the effective implementation of policies and procedures relating to safeguarding and wellbeing, comply with statutory regulations and communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and agencies appropriately.
Key Responsibilities: To teach contemporary
  • The teacher must be proficient in and able to teach either Grahm, Horton or Limon Technique to the highest level.

  • To coach and create work within agreed contemporary technique
  • To follow the system of training as directed by the Artistic Director
  • To take responsibility for the coaching and preparation of students for assessments, performances and competitions when required or when requested by the Artistic Director, participating in all aspects of preparation
  • To prepare students with their video auditions for national and international companies
  • To work with visiting choreographers when required by the Artistic Director
  • To attend formal auditions, either as a member of the audition panel or as the teacher for the audition; to attend interviews with successful candidates when asked to do so by the Artistic Director
  • To attend and actively participate in staff meeting and training events
  • To maintain attendance records, write progress reports and deliver on all areas of administration relating to the role
  • To assess students at the points in the academic year agreed with the accrediting body, using the published criteria and procedures
  • To provide written reports of the assessment in the agreed format, within the timescale required by the school
  • To supervise students undertaking work outside school premises when requested to do so
  • To teach on the school’s short courses when required
  • To deputise for other teachers when requested to do so internally or externally for competitions, teaching invitations and any other activity that relates to the school’s remit.
  • To liaise with the school’s healthcare team on student injury and rehabilitation
To provide tutorial support to students
  • To act as personal tutor to a given number of students in the school. This will involve providing formal and informal pedagogic and pastoral support outside the class environment, for each student in the tutorial group throughout the year
  • To maintain written records of tutorial meetings
  • To set, mark and maintain records of tutorials assignments submitted by students.
  • To supervise and chaperone English National Ballet School students at external events and performances when required
  • To communicate with the Artistic Director, Executive Director, Head of Studies, Student Support, Healthcare Manager, Head of Wellbeing & Safeguarding, Nutrition staff (as appropriate) about any matter which comes to light through tutorial contact or in class, which may affect a student’s progress in the School
  • To communicate in written form and to meet with the parents, as requested to do so by the Artistic Director or the Executive Director
  To contribute to the development of the school’s work
  • To contribute to course planning and curriculum development, initiating ideas and developing them in written form for implementation
  • To play an active part in generating the timetable each term if required by the Artistic Director
  • To be familiar with the standards and quality assurance processes required by accrediting bodies
  • To observe classes given by other members of the permanent staff team, and to give and receive constructive feedback on the quality of teaching and learning in the School.
  To contribute to the expansion of the school’s work
  • To contribute to devising and delivering high quality short courses at the school
  • To supervise and chaperone ENBS students who are involved in external work
  • To represent the school at such external events if required.
  To uphold the policies and procedures of the school and to maintain and develop teaching practice and sectorial knowledge
  • To be familiar with and adhere to the school’s policies and procedures.
  • To take part in the school appraisal and assessment scheme
  • To undertake such staff development as may be identified through the appraisal scheme or which has been identified by the Artistic Director or Executive Director
  • Willingness to attend and participate in staff training days which include Safeguarding, Prevent and First Aid training amongst others. Together with reviewing and re-drafting curriculum documentation, it is essential that staff are not only willing to attend staff training but also actively participate.

PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR CONTEMPORARY TEACHER 

Applicants for this post should demonstrate how their skills and experience meet the following Person Specification.

Essential Experience, Knowledge and Skills:
  • Detailed and proven knowledge of contemporary dance practices, and the key traditions of training, education and performance that together will enable you to deliver the standard of teaching required by the Artistic Director
  • Up to date knowledge of contemporary repertoire, particularly that of English National Ballet
  • Successful and proven experience of performing with a major professional company
  • Experience of working as a contemporary teacher with advanced students aged 16-19
  • A high level of general education relevant to the role
  • A dance teaching qualification endorsed by a recognised educational body
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English
  • Basic knowledge of Windows PC systems and Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Outlook or willing to undergo training
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to the design of new courses
  • Experience of marking dance related academic work
  • Committed to lifelong learning

  • Well networked within the dance industry
  • Experience of contemporary training in the UK
